What are the consequences when you have some teeth missing?

  • Your teeth are designed to work as a team. As with any team, when some members are absent the team doesn’t work as well as it should. When you have some teeth missing it can cause others to drift into the gap left behind, impacting overall function and causing further breakdown.
  • Another point to consider is that you cannot chew without teeth.
Your teeth are one of the most essential parts of your digestive process – the step in which your food is cut, ground and torn to help your digestive enzymes do their job properly. When you are missing teeth, this stage is less effective.
  • Finally, when you have some teeth missing your face loses some of its structural support causing your cheeks and lips to sink in and making you look older.

You have options when it comes to replacing missing teeth

With today’s dental technology, there are very few oral health problems your dentist can’t fix.

Options available for when you have some teeth missing may include:

What’s the difference between the three?

In most circumstances we consider dental implants to be the most effective treatment option when you have some teeth missing because they don’t just replace the tooth, they replace its roots. A dental implant consists of a titanium fixture that’s implanted into your jawbone. Through a process called osseointegration, the implant becomes fused to your jawbone as it heals around it. Once the healing process is complete, the implant is capped with a dental crown or similar restoration that is colour matched to your natural teeth.

Dental implants. however, may not always be the best treatment option. Factors like cost, anatomic variances and the amount of remaining bone can make other treatment options preferable. For these cases, Dr Sandhu will recommend a fixed bridge or a removable partial denture.
