Are you afraid of pain during your dental treatment?

If you suffer from dental anxiety or dental fear, you are not alone and dental sedation may help. Many Canadians report that they are scared of the dentist to some degree. In many cases, dental fear can cause people to avoid dental treatment altogether.

Why do people fear the dentist?

  • To some, dental fear may arise from the belief that the procedure will be uncomfortable.
  • Others fear the feeling that they have no control over the situation.
  • Some people associate the sterile smell of a dental office with medical facilities that may trigger associative fears.
  • A personal bad experience or a story from a friend can also cause fear and avoidance of dental treatment.

Dental phobia is detrimental to your health

Avoiding the dentist can pose long term consequences to your oral health and in some cases even your general health.

We’re not trying to scare you more, but without regular professional care, you are putting yourself at risk for developing gum disease. You’re also potentially letting dental issues flourish into bigger problems.

Issues such as cavities and diseases such as oral cancer, are often most effectively dealt with in their early stages. Once these problems grow, treatment and the associated cost often grows as well.

Ironically, bigger problems can also be more painful to fix – the very reason why you were avoiding treatment in the first place.

Dental sedation can help you overcome your fear of the dentist

At Saby Dental, we offer two methods of dental sedation:

Oral sedation in Red Deer, AB T4N 6V7 is a relatively straightforward way of overcoming dental fear so that you can calmly undergo preventive dental care. It’s a sedative, usually Valium or Halcion, that’s administered in the form of a pill. While you’ll be awake during your treatment, the medication will make you feel drowsy. It puts you in that half-asleep zone – the way you feel when you’re not quite awake yet. Many patients have little or no memory of their appointment. Because of the effects of oral sedation medication, you’ll need to arrange for someone to take you home from your appointment. You won’t be able to safely drive or work until the drowsiness wears off. We recommend you relax for the remainder of the day.

Nitrous oxide is also know as laughing gas. It is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a mask that’s placed over your nose. It’s a safe and effective sedation agent that makes you feel light-headed and calm. Drowsiness is not an effect of this type of dental sedation. It wears off quickly allowing you to return to your day.
